Sandakan town is always known as the little Hong Kong but first time visitor to Sandakan wonder why this nickname as the town has no high rise building and busy traffic and certainly doesn’t look like Hong Kong. Some say because of the food and most of the Chinese in Sandakan speak Cantonese. Some even says most of the earlier Chinese settlers actually came to Sandakan from Guangdong Province via Hong Kong. or is it a walk to the town area remind you of old Hong Kong where flat built near to each other, cloth hanging out from balcony and the bust business activities at the ground flood. Whatever the reason is, the town area of Sandakan is still very much populated with old buildings and Sandakan is one of the main gateway for Ecotourism in Sabah such as the Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Labuk Bay proboscis Monkey Sanctuary and Gomantong Caves.
