27th March 2015 – The rich traditions of the Chinese culture is one of the most instantly recognisable in the world, with its pages of history spanning thousands of years. However, much like other ancient cultures from all over the world, many Chinese traditions have since faded and lost with time.
One of those traditions that is currently at the brink of extinction is the traditional Hakka Unicorn Dance. With the number of troupes performing the Unicorn Dance drastically dropping all over the world, it may not take long before the beautiful, illustrious and exchanging Hakka Unicorn Dance fall victim to the rises of modern technology and light speed moving times.
This is why the Sabah Dragon, Unicorn and Lion Dance association took upon themselves to organise the very first World Hakka Unicorn Convention in Sabah, dubbed the Sabah World Hakka Unicorn Convention 2015 as a measure to preserve and protect the traditional art go the Hakka Unicorn Dance.
One of the main objectives of the first convention is to discuss among all the troupe Masters from all over the world to find out what is the true origin of the Hakka Unicorn, what is the true story behind it, what is the real design of the Unicorn head and what is the authentic dance moves that was invented by the ancient Hakkas thousands of years ago.
After establishing these facts, the Convention will then proceed to documenting all the information exchanged among participants and submit the finding to the Hakka Cultural Centre, where is will be kept and made available for generations to come.
Among the impotence of documenting the history of the Hakka Unicornn Dance is to enable future competitions to have a guideline as to how the routines can be judged as well as troupes from all over the world would have a reference point for their performances and head designs as well as other uses related to the Hakka Unicorn Dance. Currently, there are no recorded history or guidelines for the Hakka Unicorn as all the information and knowledge are passed down by mouth from one generation to another.
