Fancy getting a spa treatment in Sabah? Why not drop by Kampung “Tagal” Sungai Moroli, Kampung Luanti at Ranau district and let the fishes here give you one of its kind of massage and spa treatment. Tagal means ‘no fishing’ in Local Kadazan Dusun dialect and it is a collective effort from government and local communities to preserve the environment and ecosystem of the river. The Tagal system have been implement at over 500 river around Sabah which entails zoning sections of the river, which would then remain off-limits to fishing activities for a certain period to allow the resources to flourish before being harvested jointly by the villagers involved. Kampung Luanti is one of the successful story and received over 50,000 visitors in year 2013, generating economic spin-off for the villagers here.
The fishes are mostly ‘Ikan Pelian’ or Malaysian Mahseer which live in their natural habitat and they are use to the presence of people. Once you take a dip inside the river, The fishes will come surrounding you and nibble away the dead skin on your feet. The fishes sizes may scare you off but they are very gentle and toothless. Every visitor are allocated a 15 minutes time in order to give chance to the others to have their “spa” treatment by the fish. Fish pellets are available at RM 1 per small packet if you want to feed the fishes.

“Tagal” Sungai Moroli, Kampung Luanti is located next to the entrance of Sabah Tea Garden on the road to Sandakan. Drive from Kota Kinabalu take about 2 hours. You can plan a trip to “Tagal” Sungai Moroli, Kampung Luanti together with a visit to Kundasang,Kinabalu National Park or Poring Hot Spring.
