Pork Noodle (Sang Nyuk Mian) 生肉面

Sang Nyuk Mian (meaning fresh meat noodle) is Sabah version of Pork Noodle. The soup is clear with a sweet taste from the meat which is sliced thin. One of the earliest Sang Nyuk Mian started at Sinsuran Sabah and is still one of the best place to go for pork noodle. Sang Nyuk Mian become famous after a youtube video about Lao Yong appear before General Election 2013 talking about Sabah politics.

Beef Noodle (Ngiu Chap) 牛雜面

Beef Noodle in Sabah is also known as “Ngiu Chap” literally meaning Mix Beef. A bowl of Ngiu Chap usually comes with a beef, beef slice, stew beef, tripe, intestine, tongue, heart, spleen, liver and  beef balls. Sabah is one of the best place in Malaysia for beef lover as there are many shop selling beef noodles. One of the most famous beef noodles is Nyuk Pao Zai started 25 years ago from a small town of Menggatal. The soup is thicker and the serving size is bigger compared to other vendors. A bowl of Ngiu Chap start from RM7.  They have many branches throughout Kota Kinabalu nowadays so you don’t have to travel to Menggatal to enjoy the beef noodle and one of the nearest branch to my house is at Lintas Plaza. One of the oldest beef noodles shop in Sabah is Kedai Cheng Wah at Lido, Penampang serving Hainan style beef noodle. the broth is done just right, not too salty and not too thick.

No travel to Sabah is complete without tasting the fresh and cheap seafood here. Choose from a huge varieties of seafood such as lobster, prawn, crams and fish. One of the best place for seafood is Welcome Seafood at Asia city. The price is affordable and they have huge variety of seafood to choose from. Be there early and be prepared for the slow service as there is a huge demand from the tourist here.

Roti Kahwin 麵包

Sabahan love their bread, especially the fresh-baked bread serve at Fook Yuen Coffee Shop. Roti Kahwin (marriage bread) means a mix of frozen butter and Kaya with the bread. The bread is soft and they also serve some of the best local coffee and tea in Kota Kinabalu. choose the un-toasted one if you want to feel the softness of the bread. They have few branches around Kota Kinabalu now so you can enjoy Roti Kahwin everywhere.

Pan Fried Dumplings (WO TIE) 鍋貼

Wo Tie, or Woh Thip, or Gyoza is one the favourite side dish for Sabahan during meal. Small stalls selling Wo Tie can be found at some coffee shop. Wo Tie are usually served with freshly prepared skin to be pan fried when an order is made. The fresh juice from the dumpling burst out on the first bite. One of the place you can find Wo Tie is at Damai (Opposite Fook Yuen ).
